Types of professorships at DIT

Did you know that a habilitation is not required for a professorship with us?
What counts for a professorship at a university of applied sciences is your ability to do academic work (usually a doctorate) and your practical experience. If you do not fulfil these requirements, the path to a junior professorship is open to you. 
In addition, a university degree and pedagogical aptitude are required for the position. 

At our university, we offer three different types of professorships that are tailored to the different needs and career goals of academics

 

In order to start directly as a professor, you must be qualified for academic work, usually proven by a doctorate, and have at least five years of professional experience (at least three years outside the university) after completing the relevant university degree programme. You must also provide evidence of your pedagogical aptitude. After your appointment as a professor, you will be involved in teaching and research as well as in self-administration at DIT. You can adapt the focus of your activities to your interests. As a rule, your teaching commitments will be reduced to an appropriate extent for your additional commitment or research activities.

Do you lack a doctorate? Or have you recently completed your doctorate and do not yet have 5 years of professional experience? Committed young academics who lack either a doctorate or the necessary professional experience have the opportunity to take the path to a professorship with our junior professorship programmes.

We offer the following two specific junior professorships at our university:

  • The junior professorship in the doctoral track is aimed at academics with an excellent Master's degree and at least five years of professional experience (three years of which must be spent outside the university) who wish to pursue an academic career. 
     
  • As junior professors in the practice track, those with a doctorate who do not have the legally required five years of professional experience (three years of which must be outside of higher education) can aspire to a professorship. 

In the case of an appointment to a W1 junior professorship, the missing qualification (for the practice track the professional experience in collaboration with industry, for the doctoral track the special aptitude for scientific work, which is usually proven by the quality of a doctorate) must be provided as part of the W1 junior professorship.

Grade: W2

Employment relationship: Civil servant relationship (upon fulfilment of the general requirements under civil service law) or employment relationship under private law

Full-time position: 18 weekly semester hours in Teaching

General requirements (according to Art. 57 para. 3 BayHIG): 

  • Completed university degree
  • Pedagogical aptitude
  • Special aptitude for academic work, which is usually demonstrated by the quality of a doctorate
  • Special achievements in the application or development of scientific knowledge and methods in at least five years of professional practice, which must have been acquired after completion of the university degree and of which at least three years must have been spent outside the university sector. In special cases, proof of professional practice outside the higher education sector can be provided by the fact that a significant part of the professional activity was carried out over a period of at least five years in cooperation between the university and non-university professional practice.

 

 

Grade: W1

Employment relationship: Temporary civil servant relationship (subject to fulfilment of the general requirements under civil service law) or fixed-term employment relationship under private law

Full-time position: 6 - 9 weekly semester hours in Teaching

General requirements (according to Art. 64 para. 2 BayHIG)

  • Completed university degree
  • Pedagogical aptitude
  • Special achievements in the application or developmental scientific knowledge and methods in at least five years of professional practice, which must have been acquired after completion of the university degree and of which at least three years must have been spent outside the university sector. In special cases, proof of professional practice outside the university sector can be provided by the fact that a significant part of the professional activity has been carried out over a period of at least five years in cooperation between the university and non-university professional practice.

  • Special aptitude for academic work, which is usually demonstrated by the quality of a doctorate. No more than four years should have passed between the doctorate and the end of the application period. The date of the doctoral certificate is decisive.

Special features:

In the case of an appointment to a W1 junior professorship, the missing qualification, in this case professional experience in collaboration with industry, must be provided as part of the W1 junior professorship.

Your path to a professorship

The following steps describe the selection process for filling a vacant professorship (also junior professorship) at Deggendorf Institute of Technology. Firstly, the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts is informed of the vacancy for a professorship at Deggendorf Institute of Technology. The vacancy is then advertised in online and print media.

Once the applications for the vacant position have been received, the appointment process is divided into these steps:

 

1. application period

The Human Resources department sends the list of all applications to the appointment committee as soon as the application deadline has expired (usually after 4-6 weeks). In the case of applicants with severe disabilities/equal opportunities, the representative body for severely disabled persons is consulted.


The appointment committee consists of:

  • At least 4 professors with voting rights, including one external member (in most cases one of the two external assessors); at least one of these must be a professor who is not also a representative for equal opportunities for women in science and the arts at the university
  • The responsible representative for equal opportunities for women in science and the arts of the respective faculty
  • A representative of the academic and artistic staff, as well as the doctoral candidates enrolled in the structured doctoral programme of Deggendorf Institute of Technology of the respective faculty
  • Representative of the students of the respective faculty

 

2. selection phase

The first appointment committee meeting takes place. The appointment committee selects which applicants are to be invited to the trial teaching event. The date for the trial course and the topic of the compulsory presentation are set. The Human Resources Department carries out a further, more in-depth examination of the applicants' formal eligibility for appointment. Suitable applicants will receive an invitation to the trial teaching event. The date can be announced in advance as a save the date. The topic for the compulsory lecture will be announced at the earliest 3 weeks and at the latest 2 weeks before the date of the trial lecture. The topic of the elective lecture can be chosen by the selected persons themselves. It should also be noted that at least one lecture must be organised as a course and one lecture must be held in English.


3. Trial lecture and shortlist formation

On the day of the trial course, the applicants present their two lectures. This is followed by a professional discussion. You will demonstrate your expertise and motivation with regard to your future role as a professor. The probationary teaching event takes place in public at the university.

Finally, a personal interview with the appointment committee takes place in camera. You will get to know the appointment committee and convince them of your personal, pedagogical and professional suitability as well as your research strengths.

After the invited persons have been heard, a list is drawn up, usually with the three most suitable persons for the professorship. Those on the list will be notified by the Human Resources Department.

 

4. committee phase & appointment

The appointments committee forwards the list to the President and the Senate. The Senate can comment on the list within a certain period of time. The President may conduct familiarisation interviews with the candidates on the list. The President decides on the appointment without being bound by the ranking of the appointment proposal.

The appointment is made with the request to accept the appointment within four weeks. This is followed by the appointment negotiations with the President.

The appointment usually takes place at the beginning of the winter or summer semester (on 1 September, 1 October or 1 March).

 

5. A good start at the DIT

It is very important to us that you settle in well in your new role as a professor at Deggendorf Institute of Technology. For this reason, a mentor will be at your side from day one as part of our induction process. Further relevant information and contact persons for your induction will be provided at our welcome event ‘Welcome to THD’ for all new employees and newly appointed professors. General Information about a professorship:

 

In an open-rank advertisement, the field of applicants is not limited in advance by the advertised level of the professorship. For example, a vacancy for a professorship/junior professorship can be published (depending on the requirements of the applicants).

In the case of advertisements without reference to a specific grade (open-rank advertisements), the criteria for the respective grade must result from the advertisement or from university regulations to which the advertisement refers (Art. 66 para. 3 sentence 2 BayHIG).

As part of a professorship, you can be appointed both as a civil servant and as an employee under private law (Art. 58 BayHIG). Below we explain the differences between the four employment relationships:

Probationary civil servant status:
If the requirements under civil service law are met, but you cannot provide evidence of three years of full-time employment at a university, you will initially be appointed to a probationary civil servant position (probationary period generally lasts 1.5 years).

Civil servant status for life:
If you can provide evidence of three years of full-time employment at a university and fulfil the other requirements under civil service law, you will be appointed as a civil servant for life.

Temporary civil servant status:
Another form of civil servant status is temporary civil servant status. Professors can be appointed as temporary civil servants for a period of up to six years (Art. 58 Para. 2 BayHIG).

Employment under private law:
In addition, employment under private law is possible. For example, if you exceed the age limit (completion of 52 years of age) at the time of appointment or are a non-EU/EEA citizen. This also applies if the other requirements under civil service law for an appointment as a civil servant are not met or if the professorship is advertised directly as a salaried position.

Teaching staff at universities of applied sciences have the following standard teaching obligations per semester:

  • Professors: 18 teaching hours (weekly semester hours)
  • Junior professors: 6 to 9 teaching hours (weekly semester hours)

(Section 4 (1) no. 1 and no. 2 of the Implementing Ordinance to the Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act - AVBayHIG of 13 February 2023)

A course hour comprises at least 45 minutes of teaching time per week during the lecture period in the semester. One course hour represents the time and effort regularly required for a properly prepared 45-minute classroom lecture. In the case of professorships, one teaching hour corresponds to three working hours.

 

 

In addition to teaching and research, the full-time professional duties of a professor include participation in the self-administration of the university and in student counselling. You can read about the duties in detail in Art. 59 Para. 1 BayHIG.

Is a professorship right for me?

 

Remuneration in salary group W1 / junior professorship (according to the Bavarian Salaries Act)

W1 fixed amount: € 5538.75 

 


 

Remuneration in grade W2 (according to the Bavarian Remuneration Act)

W2 level 1 (from entry): 6824,23 €

W2 level 2 (after 5 years of service): € 7094.18

W3 level 3 (after a further 7 years of service): € 7499.05

You can see directly from our job offers whether it is a full-time or part-time professorship.

In addition, you can also take advantage of the part-time family policy within the framework of a full-time professorship. For civil servants (Art. 89 BayBG) and salaried employees (§ 11 TV-L), the part-time family policy can be utilised if at least one child under the age of 18 or a relative in need of care is being cared for.

During the lecture period, professors with an individual teaching commitment of 16 SWS* or more teach at least four days a week. If the individual teaching commitment is less, the course must be taught three days a week.

In addition, flexible working hours without core working hours are the best way to reconcile work and family as well as leisure time. * Note: The teaching commitment may be reduced in terms of hours due to the fulfilment of special tasks and functions at DIT.

 

 

The following options are available for obtaining at least five years of professional practice:

  • Five years of full-time professional activity (at least 50 % / 20 h) outside the university sector or
  • At least three years outside the university sector (at least 50 % / 20 h) and at least two years within the university sector (at least 50 % / 20 h) or
  • At least five years of a significant part (at least 50 % / 20 h) of the professional activity in co-operation between university and non-university professional practice.


Note: The Human Resources Department will check the formal eligibility for appointment during the appointment process on the basis of employment contracts and/or references and/or certificates.

 

 

In special cases, proof of professional practice outside the higher education sector can be provided if a significant part of the professional activity has been carried out over a period of at least five years in cooperation between the university and non-university professional practice (at least 50 % / 20 h).

Option 1: Are you aiming for a W2 professorship and have already achieved doctorate-adequate performance*?

If so, we need you to provide us with expert reports on your doctoral achievements. The expert reports on doctorate-adequate achievements comment on the candidate's academic achievements and demonstrate that the academic achievements are equivalent to a doctorate on the basis of publications, patents and competitions, for example. Please do not hesitate to contact us.

Option 2: You do not have any achievements* equivalent to a doctorate and would like to pursue the career path of a professor?

* Note: In subject areas in which doctorates are unusual, outstanding projects, artistic productions, awards, relevant publications, exhibitions and competition wins, etc. may alternatively be recognised as achievements appropriate for a doctorate.

If you intend to take up a part-time position, it is important to submit an application for authorisation via your dean to the HRM Department - Civil Service Law Unit - before taking up the part-time position and to await the decision. In principle, professors, regardless of whether they work full-time or part-time, can take on a limited amount of part-time work.

It is very important to us that you settle in well in your new role as a professor at Deggendorf Institute of Technology. For this reason, a mentor will be at your side from day one as part of our induction process. Further relevant information and contact persons for your induction will be provided at our welcome event “Welcome to DIT” for all new employees and newly appointed professors (usually held twice a year).

Our support program ranges from applying for research funding and a mentoring programme for digital teaching to the Dual Career Service and much more.
